Classical literary criticism: (Romans and ancient Greeks)
-Aristotle
-Horace (analysis of: A Description of Tragedy)
-Longinus (analysis of: On the Sublime)
Renaissance literary criticism:
-Sir Philip Sidney
-Neo-classicist criticism:
- DrSamuel Johnson (Prefaces to the Plays of William Shakespeare)
-John Dryden (An Essay on Dramatic Poetry)
-Alexander Pope (Essay in criticism)
Historical literary criticism:
- Hypolite Taine
Biographical literary criticism:
- Sainte-Beuve
Romantic literary criticism:
- William Wordsworth and Coleridge ( study of the preface of : Lyrical Ballads)

19th century British theatre:
We have two plays to study.
* Juno and the Paycock written by the Irish playwright Sean O'casey.
* Man and Superman by Bernard Shaw.
