Re: I need information
Hi Princess It's a little bit large, can you be more precise and tell me more?? (Do you need general notions about American literature and civilization? And what for??)
Here is something general to read if this is what you're looking for
http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/northamerica/after1500/literature/index.htm
You can read about North American history here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_America
I just go to wikipedia when I want to have a general idea about something

Re: I need information
Let's start with this part A Game of Chess which takes place in a pub in London. For the moment this is what came to my mind ( I must re-read it in order to write smth better )
1-One of modernist techniques used by Eliot in this section is what's called perspectivism ( a story told differently by many narrators) the question which might be asked is how many people have been heart talking in a Game of Chess?
You got five voices:the narrator , Lil, Lil's husband (Albert), Lil's friend and the barman's voice which is always interrupting by saying HURRY UP PLEASE, IT'S TIME . In this section we do not hear T.S Eliot's voice at all. we've no intervention of the author which is called authorial intrusion (impersonality)
2- another technique used is High culture and low culture ( you can find the explanation in Sassy's post https://blida-english.bbactif.com/t1889-modernism). In the section understudy, T.S Eliot used low culture i.e a common people register. All the language used is a colloquial language (mostly the Cockney dialect which is used in East London ins used in this section).
3- At the end of this extract we have intertextuality between T.S Eliot and Shakespeare. Eliot makes use of Shakespeare's play Hamlet
Goonight Bill. Goonight Lou. Goonight May. Goonight.
Ta ta. Goonight. Goonight.
Good night, ladies, good night, sweet ladies, good night, good night.
This is Ophelia's farewell before her suicide.
I'll be back with a stronger analysis
