British Council presents: Speak Up!
The 2nd conference for English language teachers, organized by British Council Algeria, will be held on 29 March 2012 at the Centre des Loisirs Scientifique, Batna. The conference aims to bring together teachers of English from Algeria and abroad to discuss and share best practices, new ICT (Information Communication Technology) tools, and issues and solutions for teaching English in Algeria. The program includes 7 parallel sessions, a workshop and talks by both national and international presenters.
The Batna conference follows up on the success of the First Conference for English Language Teachers which was held in Algiers last year; and highlights the British Council’s commitment to offer high quality events in different regions of Algeria. It is hoped that 120 delegates interested in developing English language teaching and resources in Algeria will attend. There will be a fusion of national and international experts, reasserting British Council’s objective of facilitating the development of English language experts and institutions in both the public and private sector.
Key speakers:
Paul Phillips is the new English Project manager for British Council. He has worked as a teacher and teacher trainer in Africa, Europe and South America.
Hands free teaching: During this session, Paul will demonstrate a range of activities that can be done without the need for any materials or preparation. By the end of the session participants will have a great toolkit of activities that will add variety to classes without adding work to the teacher!
Saliha Si-chaib is a teacher and teacher trainer who specializes in group dynamics. She regularly attends international ELT conferences and is a member of British Council ‘StartUp’ group which is working to develop high quality language teaching in Algeria.
Notes for a teacher: The secret of a good lesson resides in the inter-activity and group dynamic the teacher creates in the classroom.
Tahar Asses is a secondary school teacher. He has a magister in course design and evaluation. He is also a member of British Council ‘StartUp’ group which is working to develop high quality language provision in Algeria.
Multilevel tasks for teaching receptive skills in mixed-ability classes: Are input materials and activity types used for listening and reading in the textbooks you use suitable to mixed-ability classes? Can they be adapted and differentiated for inclusive classes wherein no learner is left behind whatever his/her proficiency level? Participants will discuss and practice the suggested techniques for adapting and differentiating reading and listening tasks to suit learners’ varying abilities.
Anna Hasper is an internationally renowned teacher trainer who travels the world delivering training courses for the British Council.
Teaching the fifth skill - Thinking: In this session Anna will introduce us to how we can better get into the minds of our learners and understand how they think. Bloom's Taxonomy, The 6 Thinking Hats of De Bono and Multiple Intelligences will be discussed.
Information and Communications Technology (ICT): Hamza and Mohamed will present new forms of TEFL technology which can be effectively used in an EFL classroom - in order to make the learning more fun, the teaching more beneficial and the teacher more up-to-date. They will be exploring websites and blogs such as Backchanneling, Diigo and Wordle.
