Re: The Kingdom of Dictionaries
The Oxford Thesaurus: An A-Z Dictionary of Synonyms
Author: Laurence Urdang
Published by: OUP (1994)
File size: 3.6 MB
File type: pdf
This is the first comprehensive thesaurus of current English published by Oxford University Press. Headwords are readily found in an A-Z listing, and a full synonym index enables readers to find synonyms which are not also headwords.
The Oxford Thesaurus emphasises current English, but includes enough quaint terms and plenty of regional, idiomatic and slang terms in English from around the world to provide colourful options. Most entries provide sample sentences, but the bulk of the tome is composed of synonyms (with antonyms--added for this second edition--for contrast), so you needn't wade through lots of excess verbiage when what you really want is the phrase that says what you have in mind, with the right tone and flair. The Oxford Thesaurus makes it effortless. --Stephanie Gold --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Re: The Kingdom of Dictionaries
Delahunty, Dignen, & Stock - The Oxford Dictionary of Allusions (2001)
English / PDF / 480 pages / 8.41 MB
# Hardcover: 480 pages
# Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA (July 1, 2001)
# Language: English
# ISBN: 0198600313
Wonderfully conceived and extraordinarily useful, this new literary dictionary has been created by a team of freelance lexicographers who have compiled many dictionaries, and their experience shows. The contents have been drawn from a wide-ranging reading program designed to identify the allusions encountered most frequently in literature both modern and canonical. Thus, it covers classical myths and modern culture and ranges from "Ahab" to "Teflon," "Eve" to "Darth Vader." The dictionary is alphabetical but can be searched both by the word used as an allusion and by the theme represented. The dictionary is particularly well laid out, with the major theme of the allusion captioned and explained, followed by the words representing that allusion. Many entries include a quotation illustrating the allusion in use. For allusions based on names, the editors have added explanatory sections describing who these figures were and why they and/or their stories represent various themes. What results is a supremely useful dictionary that is highly recommend for all libraries.
