Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness: A Casebook (Casebooks in Criticism)
By Gene M. Moore

  • Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA

  • Number Of Pages: 288

  • Publication Date: 2004-03-11

Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad's fictional account of a journey up the Congo river in 1890, raises important questions about colonialism and narrative theory. This casebook contains materials relevant to a deeper understanding of the origins and reception of this controversial text, including Conrad's own story "An Outpost of Progress," together with a little-known memoir by one of Conrad's oldest English friends, a brief history of the Congo Free State by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and a parody of Conrad by Max Beerbohm. A wide range of theoretical approaches are also represented, examining Conrad's text in terms of cultural, historical, textual, stylistic, narratological, post-colonial, feminist, and reader-response criticism. The volume concludes with an interview in which Conrad compares his adventures on the Congo with Mark Twain's experiences as a Mississippi pilot.

There are a lot of aspects of modernism in Heart of darkness, from the fragmentation of narrative and the use of different narrators, to the literal techniques used by Conrad. In the link below you'll find an interesting article that talks about the fragmentation of language in Heart of Darkness.

Briefly, the aspects of modernism in H of D
there is the flash back ,using frame tale
the symbolism :the dominos ,the painting woman ,the horror
impressionism :the use of colours
the psycho-analysis :how marlow lost his super ego(morals) in africa
yet ,the novel has some other naturalistic aspects;
men is determined by nature like kurtz
it has a pessimstic end (the phisical death of kurtz , and moral death of marlow)

I know that your post is concise but I just wanted to make something clear if possible. For impressionism it's not the use of colours which makes it impressionist, colour symbolism is something and impressionism is generally another thing.

For the psychoanalytical interpretation, I didn't get why you said that Marlow lost his super ego so would you please make it clear. Thank you very much

Well just in brief, the character is not a human being as a part from his society, he is individual and being studied as an individual not as a part from his society. He has no free will, as Emile Zola said , he is"Human beast", he is not a hero, frequently ill-educated or lower class character whose life is governed by inner forces; heridity, instincts, desires, and outer forces; environement, social laws, customs and traditions.

hello friends .I'd like some information about Heart of Darkness
1/- Account for the use of "Darkness" in the novel; firstly as the book's title & secondly as a symbol through the text.

what does Darkness represent ? is its meaning constant or changing and /or changeover?

thank you very much, that really helped . I have another question:
2/- describe Conrad's intention about the double simultaneous use of an anonymous first level narrator who refers to himself as "I" and tells the story of a second level narrator, called Marlow, Telling a story.
