Ethnicity n race
salam dear mates =)
I found this in one of the previous MA topics and I honestly have no clue about how to handle that question
Would someone please help me in dissolving the answer of this question?
1- the impact of ethnicity on American foreign policy. Discuss with reference
to specific ethnic groups and events.
Thank you in advance

Re: Ethnicity n race
Hi dear B.
First when you speak about ethnicity in the USA,
we're undoubtedly dealing with multiculturalism (along with ' melting pot',
topics that i know you already worked on and you master very well).
So you first give a brief survey on the US society as having always been a multicultural society (derived mainly from
immigration).
Then give a lingered survey on the different ethnic groups (Hispanic, African, European, Arab, Indian, Caribbean,…etc).
You explain, like you did when dealing with multiculturalism, the problem of minorities. But here, you make a sort of
transition, declaring that what used to be called minorities is now in constant growth and that the US now is witnessing the increasing of a multicultural society and that this may have visible effects on America's foreign policy
especially after the 1965 Immigration Act (it is a MUST, you have to check it) which contributed at a deviation from the "nation's identity" and which favored the appearance of a "new identity" that changed America's former foreign policy.
Now you may build on your essay on this act, declaring that it allowed certain privileges regarding other countries, a sort of "opening" in terms of policy. America could overcome its isolationist view.
I say that this act is a 'must' only in terms of its long lasting effects but there are many consensuses, especially regarding the Hispanic community (that is now said becoming a threat).
There are many effects and other events that I recommend you to read in these articles: (check the
first for I believe it to be relevent and academic. It's a Jstor article):

Re: Ethnicity n race
Hello wonderland, (I'll try to answer in a prototypical way for a contest question)
If I had to answer such a question I would do the following:
1- I'll ask myself what are the controlling ideas and key words. In this question I would put (Ethnicity and race)==> (Foreign Policy).
2- I would try to make a brainstorming to see what might come out of my background. I’ll take my rough paper and write anything that comes across my mind (writers, events, dates, stories, an anecdote, etc)
3- I’ll try now to select relevant ideas and try to come out with a kind of outline to my paper.
4- Now in terms of what might this question mean, since it talks about the impact of ethnicity and race on foreign policy I would remember the Regionalist movement and mainly Jackson Turner and may use his ideas as a theoretical background to my essay for he claims that ethnicity has an impact on political views and
decisions.
The controlling idea foreign policy will drag me to think about the mid nineteenth century hostility to immigrants. In the East coast cities towards the Irish and German Catholics. The Irish were even not considered as white knowing that the white man was the superior of the time (and still is in many regions).
One of the most significant events of the ethnic and racial impact was the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. The mentioned act excluded the Chinese laborers from migrating to the United States for ten years. Yet, the most significant event that is the core of the paper is the 1924 Act which restricted immigration from Europe and overtly linked eligibility to ethnicity.
