Topics can conduct our revisions and readings since we don't have much time and we should be precise and concise. I think that the MA topics are recurrent so they all turn around a bunch of themes.
If you can bring more topics we'll all be grateful.

Hi, I could bring the Magister Admission test of 2008-09, here are three civilisation topics that may help you:
1-African Civilisation:

Scholars in Africa tend presently to establish links between Pharonic Egypt and civilisation in tropical and equatorial Africa.
How far is this connection tenable?

2-American Civilisation:

" The yearning to see American-style democracy duplicated throughout the world has been a persistent theme in American foreign policy". (Neil Lawis, The New York Times).
Discuss with refrence to specific examples.
3-British Civilisation:

'New' Britain and the 'New' Labour Party are said to be a by-product of eighteen years of the Conservative Party 'rule'.
Discuss.
Best wishes!

What do you think if we try to discuss between us students each of the topics in here? I think it will help us understand them better and will endow us with the required material to answer any given topic in the master contest. I propose to open a new topic in the forum for each of those topics and try to discuss them. The more views and opinions we have the best we can understand the topic.

Hi, well I think it's a great idea you've just proposed... It'll be helpful for us to share our information and try to get answers to these topics. Personally speaking I didn't understand some of them, and I do want to read about other students' suggestions and opinions; for example the works we choose to discuss.

Thanks for this brilliant idea cheers and I'm looking forward to start our discussion. Smile

The second way of life is based upon the will of the minority forcibly imposed upon the majority. Magister Entrance Examination
Bouzareah 2008
Option: Linguistics/Didactics

1- Linguistics :

Some scholars regard written languages as secondary to spoken languages. Do you agree with this view? Discuss fully.
A

The human languages involve both written and spoken languages, scholars argue that written languages are trivial and they are dependent on the spoken languages which emerged earlier in the past.
In fact, language first appeared as a number of sounds used as feelings such as means of expression about hunger, anger and happiness. These sounds do not develop in isolation but in a collective group that share the same culture and have the same background.
Since language doesn’t develop by only one person and since every group of people has a particular language that reflects its culture and way of thinking, so communication between people needed more efforts from groups to be contacted.

Therefore, written languages were supposed to lift the fog and facilitate the process of originating the human languages then begin to write languages in the age of Sumerians 4000 BC

In a nutshell; within linguistics spoken languages are principle concern whereas written languages are put in the fringes of the study.

2- Didactics:

L.Van Lier stated that theorising, researching and practicing are inseparable ingredients in the professional conduct of an educator. Do you agree with this statement? Give reasons

B

Traditionally, the teacher was regarded as the main source of knowledge for his learners thus teaching was based upon a succession process step by step building structures, each one built upon the one before, in this respect the teacher’s role was no more than instructor.

In contrast, the contemporary view of teaching has evolved a better understanding of how languages are learnt. In fact, language learning depends on research findings in both linguistics and psychology so the traditional approaches were moved to the fringes of practice. Today and within the field of applied linguistics, it is up to the teacher to learn more about linguistic which is closely related to language to form an autonomous theorising for better mastering the teaching methods then choose the appropriate one.

However, the teacher’s role is full of performances, he has not to follow the syllabus blindly, he must be a creative researcher to provide his learners by different kinds of knowledge to brush their language by mastering the grammatical competence and act the communicative situations. The traditional teaching methods were based on the teacher whose role was to teach the grammar directly, and the vocabulary lists by rote, but today its up to the learner to product and develop autonomy for solving problems in the class which is alike to those of real life, learners transfer information through enjoyable social games played by groups and do project work as a final product of his action oriented process which is said to be practiced by the teacher who acts as a guider.

In short, theorising, researching and practicing are the main steps followed by the teacher in the learning teaching process

N.B: Both A and B are but models and NOT the typical answers, therefore they should be disregarded.

The second way of life is based upon the will of the minority forcibly imposed upon the majority. It relies upon terror and oppression, a controlled press and radio, fixed elections, and the suppression of personal freedoms. I believe it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressure”.

Hello Haku,

It is not possible to label a writer this way. Every writer has a bulk of themes he tackled and it depends on the criticism more than on the writer himself.

Anyway, here you may find the writers of the age and you'll find links to their themes and works.
