Re: what are the concepts of modernism and naturalism in the red badge of courage ?
Excuse my little knowldge. THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE is a naturalistic novel and is avant guard to modernism. In other words:the novel is naturalistic and contains aspect of modernism.lets begin with NATURALISM: First we know that from the characters,if you have read the novel ,you can clearly see that the characters are determined by outer forces and inner ones.HENRY FLEMING as an example is determined by his fear.SECOND,we can also notice that the characters have TRAGIC FLAWS,it is seen through the names (the tall soldier the youth the loud soldier.....) if we take the youth his tragic flaw lies on his unexperience since he is young,a tall solider is tragic flaw since he would be the first to be shot.Third, the imagery of animals throughout the novel, clearly depicts that human being is determined and this determinism let him be similar to an animal. in addition to that, we have the scientific treatment of characters. MODERNISM(or aspect of modernism) we can find it in impressionism used in the novel especially the use of coulours.psychoanalytic approach, the treatment of the psyche ,it is clearly seen in the youth.the use of stream of counsiousness and the indirect meaning in addition to the atmosphere of pissimism. i hope i have helped or at least given you somthing to rely on.sorry for the mistakes if there are any and especilly for my style.
