Hi, thanks for your question and I hope it'll help others too.

For the MA, there's a whole category in the forum called What About Post-graduation. There we'll try to post all the news and tips that might help to get the MA contest. But The best is to have someone in this forum who prepares an MA and who's willing to help us.

For books and lectures in literature and other modules, there's also a category for that. You go to Eeverything on modules, you check the different years and you'll find some interesting links and posts, even in African Literature. You can check The Hoard where you can find very interesting topics. Smile

If you have another special question just post it and we'll do our best to find the right answer.

Enjoy the forum

There's no special way to read novels ( at least for me). You've got just to enjoy it and allow yourself to make a journey in each book you read. Don't make boundaries or frontiers to your imagination when reading. Don't think about the writer, neither about what X or Y told you about the book. Read it within! Don't worry for next year and enjoy your readings.

PS: To make your language perfect there's but reading and writing that might improve it.

Have a nice reading and read you soon

Hi Imy, don't be afraid about what others may say ' be who you are and say what you feel'. Consider "the Other's opinion" a strong motivation to work hard, to enhance your language, and improve you skills. You can do great things, just trust yourself!
Don't be afraid because it's from our mistakes that we learn great things, most importantly not to repeat the mistakes again.
Summer holiday is a good opportunity, read as much as you can.

To Butterfly and all third year students to be:
Though you asked Hush only for help, I allowed myself to give you, in my turn, some tips to help you be ready for next year, mainly in literature. First you asked about how you can improve your English, as an answer I can say that the best way to improve your English is to read a lot. Read anything that comes to your reach, but what if I show you kinda books where you’re gonna benefit twice if you read them. You improve your English and you enjoy reading them. These kinda books are called novels. However, if you want to benefit thrice, start with those novels you’re gonna encounter in your third year.
But how to read them:
Novels are works of literature, and literature is produced primarily to be read and enjoyed for its sake. So read your novels for the sake of enjoying them. Before you seek to grasp their meaning, seek to grasp their beauty, and before you try to answer what? And why? Try to earn that euphoria when you are able to feel, hear and see literature’s beauty.
Read your novels once or twice. During the first reading, try not to stop in order to check some difficult words, carry on reading even if you don’t understand everything. The second reading can be a careful one (don’t forget we said we improve our English through reading) so here you can use the dictionary and you’ll see how many new words, expressions and new literary structures you’re gonna learn. As a further step, make use of your writing skills and try to summarize the story of the novel relying on your own understanding of it and using your own words.
After doing all that we’ll see what’s next, believe me mates, what’s next is more enjoyable, harry up!
Here are the different novels that are part of your third year syllabus.

English literature:
- Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
-Hard times by Charles Dickens
-Heart of darkness by Joseph Conrad
American Literature:
-The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
-The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane
African Literature:
-Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
-A Grain of Wheat by Ngugi Wa Thiongo

Enjoy your reading Mates!

Hi Angeleyes, conserning linguistics I think what you have to do is to love this module first, most students hate it, because they think it's difficult. Hence they score-- if I can say bad marks in the exams. For learing your lessons by heart it depends on you and your abilities. Personally I don't learn them by heart, but I understand them well.
After your linguistic class, try when you go home to re-read the lesson, believe me it is beneficial not only for linguistics but for all the modules especially if your teacher dictates his/her lessons.
From your question I've understood that you are asking about a way to revise linguistics and keep your lessons in your mind, again if you are able to learn by heart and understand the lesson at the same time ok try to why not ( But be sure to understand the lesson first, cos you don't want to be like a parrot).

Here you can find books in linguistics posted by Hush

Hope I could help you

You're welcome and what we're saying is just a point of view and might be wrong, it might even be wrong so don't take all what we say for granted.

For linguistics it's one of the most interesting modules and may be the most important in language studies. It has a relation with all the other modules, be it grammar or literature or even civilisation! It's not difficult but may be is new for you and this is why you might face some difficulties. Linguistics is easy in the way that it's logic and follows a vigorous approach in dealing with language. You'll face a lot of new terms because linguistics as any other science tries to be unequivocal.

Learning by heart is definitely to ban since it inhibits your mental faculties and murders your analytical mind. You've to understand it, the question is how? You may ask those who have understood, you may ask teachers and of course we can do our best here in the forum to ease it. If you have a specific question about linguistics you're welcome to ask it and we'll try to answer. I'll try to post some articles that might help you and all our mates in this forum

There is nothing to add after what hush has said, since it was quiet perfect advice.i advise you not to learn by heart.Try to project each time what have you learned and understood through writing paragraphs using your style it first helps you in improving your style and second it shows you the points you have missed.i personally use diagrams to understand linguistics since it's a science and not literature.miss angeleyes read what was proposed to you,and try to creat your own way of revising that work your information and your capacities since each of us is different. For miss EZINMA i think you will be a good teacher just don't be afraid from something you want to do.Actually there are no good and bad teachers but there are competent and none ones. jouliya
