do you agree?
the following is taken from shakespeare's play: The taming of the shrew. do you agree?
Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper,
Thy head, thy sovereign; one that cares for thee,
And for thy maintenance commits his body
To painful labour both by sea and land,
To watch the night in storms, the day in cold,
Whilst thou liest warm at home, secure and safe;
And craves no other tribute at thy hands
But love, fair looks and true obedience;
Too little payment for so great a debt.
Such duty as the subject owes the prince
Even such a woman oweth to her husband;
And when she is froward, peevish, sullen, sour,
And not obedient to his honest will,
What is she but a foul contending rebel
And graceless traitor to her loving lord?
I am ashamed that women are so simple
To offer war where they should kneel for peace;
Or seek for rule, supremacy and sway,
When they are bound to serve, love and obey.
Why are our bodies soft and weak and smooth,
Unapt to toil and trouble in the world,
But that our soft conditions and our hearts
Should well agree with our external parts?
Come, come, you froward and unable worms!
My mind hath been as big as one of yours,
My heart as great, my reason haply more,
To bandy word for word and frown for frown;
But now I see our lances are but straws,
Our strength as weak, our weakness past compare,
That seeming to be most which we indeed least are.
Then vail your stomachs, for it is no boot,
And place your hands below your husband's foot:
In token of which duty, if he please,
My hand is ready; may it do him ease.

Re: do you agree?
hehehehehe I missed some feminist talk (or feminine rather ) Thanks bilinda for this nice topic
I do agree with some points and completely disagree with the rest.
The first point I agree with, is that yes men are often exposed to harsher responsabilities and labour than ours and that yes women should value that and acknowledge their efforts.
The only reason why women seem to forget this, is that they initially have forgotten about their 'place'. Yes women work nowadays, yes they may have the same jobs as men and suffer much the same but Allah has already given them a privileged place and less troubles when He assigned the husband as the provider, but we women like challenges (if we may call it so)
What I don't agree with is comparing our jobs, tasks and responsabilities, there is nothing to compare (we're different !! God created us different! Can we compare different things?? Of course no!): Women have got some natural qualities which make them better than men in such and such tasks and men have got some qualities and capacities which enable them to exceel in such and such job which women would find hard).
We are different, but we are different to complete each others. This is Allah's will (and NOT to fight each others )
Now Shakespeare might be my favorite literary figure but he did not have the wisdom Allah has brought us with Islam.
I do admit that I was very feminist in the past regarding such subjects but hamdolah I do see things clearly now and making a balance is always good
Now what I want to know is what does bilinda think of this ???

Re: do you agree?
Yes, Sassy, I totally agree with what you said that men and women are different in order to complete each other because men can't live without women as the case for the latter. So we can see why ALLAH created Eve after creating Adam for the balance of life.

Re: do you agree?
Balance is good! but when the women abandon her "post" and her duties regarding her husband and her family in favor of her career ..it's not gona be fair ! all m saying! there must be some sort of ... preference ...!

Re: do you agree?
i really don't know what to say but i think i like it in general. though i do not like some parts where shakespeare portrays women like slaves while, like you said, they are partners and were created to complete each others.

Re: do you agree?
I disagree with him in some points .As i'm sure about that Women can work,but without drifting away from their motherhood.
In all societies the biological difference between men and women is used as a justification for forcing them into different social roles which limit and shape their attitudes and behavior.They can't practise the same job with the same yield.

Re: do you agree?
"And craves no other tribute at thy hands
But love, fair looks and true obedience;" That is what we are asking for. Is it too much?
"And when she is froward, peevish, sullen, sour,
And not obedient to his honest will,
What is she but a foul contending rebel
And graceless traitor to her loving lord?" No one can put it better than Shakespeare lol
"Come, come, you froward and unable worms!" You went too far, dude.
"Then vail your stomachs, for it is no boot,
And place your hands below your husband's foot:
In token of which duty, if he please,
My hand is ready; may it do him ease." Isn't he the man, or what?
This play is very inspiring, isn't it?
