Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles

Hi mates! @aspire: You will not regret reading this amazing novel. Tess brought Hardy great fame and honor as well as incurring harsh rebukes from conventional society.


In the novel, Hardy portrays Tess Durbeyfield ,the novel's main protagonist, as a poor innocent country girl who is to be descended from nobility, from the famous D'Urbervilles. Tess is a very pretty girl, and very "womanly" for her age. In her life, she knew two gentlemen: Alec D'Urbervilles, who is a villain , and Angel Clare. We can feel the sense of psychological depth and complexity of both characters. Their perceptions of love are extremely different. Tess was raped in the first chapters and hanged at the end!!!!
I will not give you more details and will let you discover this wonderful story. All what I can say is that Hardy's heroine is victimized by the combined forces of Victorian patriarchal society— the injustice of social law, the hypocrisy of social prejudice and the inequality of male dominance_, and a victim of her beauty, as well. Regarding all what happened to her Hardy still considers her "a pure woman" and not "a fallen woman" as named by the Victorian harsh society.

I think that you'll feel profound sympathy for Tess as I did.

I read an electronic copy. I once had a very nice, scholarly and annotated version introduced by Keith carabine and frank Kermode but God knows what quick fingered hand took it from me.
