Re: Requests (ebooks, essays, articles...etc)

Post by sassy86 on Fri Jan 27, 2012 10:53 am

@ Sabine: I started to remember some of the essays I used while working on Knights' Macbeth as a Dramatic Poem :
One of the main essays I used is "How Many Children Had Lady Macbeth?". (I will post it soon if I have some time) This essay is of eminent importance (the title itself is revelatory): L.C Knights and his mentor F.R Leavis used to use it as a kind of mockery when referring to those critics like Bradley who would concentrate so much on irrelevent details in the play and asking futile questions like "how many children had lady Macbeth" (of course Bradley didn't deal with that but this is how Knights and Leavis saw his reasonning).

Here is a passage in which Knights explains this:
I was a comparatively young man, dissatisfied with the prevailing academic approach to Shakespeare, excited by the glimpses I had obtained of new and, it seemed, more rewarding approaches, and I welcomed the opportunity of proclaiming the new principles in the very home of Shakespearean orthodoxy, whilst at the same time having some fun with familiar irrelevancies of the kind parodied in my title, How Many Children had Lady Macbeth? …………………How Many Children hgad Lady Macbeth? Has earned its footnote in the history of modern criticism partly, I like to believe, because it says a few sensible things about Macbeth, partly because of its sprightly title (which was suggested to me by F.R Leavis) …….. (page 201 from L.C Knights’ Hamlet and Other Shakespearean Essays)

As for the essay "How Many Children had Lady Macbeth" you can find it here on the magazine Exploration journal
http://www.archive.org/stream/explorations030001mbp/explorations030001mbp_djvu.txt

You're not supposed to read it entirely but to understand that Knights' theory of criticism is a conterreaction to Bradley's
