Unless you are greater than being in this forum, you certainely face some difficulties when preparing for the MA contest. So here we'll try to give a hand for each other and fix some of the problems one might face when preparing for the contest, be it psychological problems or prblems in terms of orientation and methodology.

I offer my humble comments to everyone who dares sharing with others what makes him stronger. Wink

I do need your help. So I couldn't wait for other mates to reply.
Basically, revising for the MA contest is one of the things that troubles me these days. I've started revising few weeks ago, but I still have the same horrible feelings that what I'm doing is just reading and reading. So the question that bothers me is how can I keep all what I read in my mind?! I know I have to write essays and draw outlines for the topics of the exam, but laziness is one of my bad habits. Wink
I'm facing also a problem with language ( I mean diction) and if I can say style. For example our teachers prefer that beautiful language, however mine is ... no need to describe it.

I truly appreciate all what you're doing Hush.

How to keep all what you read? I know no magical potion and I don't think everything is useful, but I may say that you don't have to keep everything. So the question would be how to keep what's most important?

For civilisation don't forget that it's a story, a big story said to be hi-story. So read it as such. Make a diagram (in your mind would be enough, but if you draw it it would be excellent). What you have in civ are two categories: either "facts" or comments on "facts", so draw the facts and make the connection between them, then read about the comments made on those facts always making connections between them.

For lit I won't say a lot save that you should create your own way of appreciating it!

Conserning language! Are you kidding me what diction are you talking about, the secret is not in diction but in sentence structures ( I have neither the first nor the second) make the power of your idea striking then smothen it with a metaphore and it's done.

Sorry I guess what I said is kinda gibberish but it's what comes across my mind now.

sorry to disterb you i m not preparing for the contest but next year if GOD wants.i HAVE read the sample you gave hush about an MA essay i think both language and style are beatiful.DO they take care of the beauty of languag,i mean do they take it into consideration as being part of the correction or not?is it preferable to focus on just one module i mean to revise for example only bri.civ instead of both civs but in detaild and in a good manner?(since i intended to do so) thanks hush you are of a great help.

Hello, for the "beauty" of language, of course it's included when evaluating the paper. You would say how to write well? I am sure you know the answer. The evaluation of the exam paper should be done on some criteria, I might post it later on God will.

Hello Melpomene, it's all about what you really want to do, if you really want to get it you definately can no matter how far you think you are, nor how difficult for you it might seem. It's not about who's the best believe me because a lot of great students didn't get it and it doens't mean they are not good. The MA is not a reference as many people try to make us believe so, nevertheless it's important because it widens your horizons and allow you to move to another level.

If you really want to have it, there is but a single advice, an advice you know very well and you've been given many times, it's reading. Even if you don't understand keep on reading, and I think what's important is to understant the logic of things, i.e what are the relations that exist between different matters, be it Civ or Lit or whatever else.

May Allah help you

Hello,

I was about to ask some questions, but having read all what you wrote I guess I will just repeat the same questions. I may look like an intruder, sign in at the end of the summer to ask questions about the MA, but as Hush have said... I'm not great, and I'm facing difficulties as well. I've succeeded after a hard toil to select what should I revise as lessons and articles. And it's getting easier day after day, although I heavily rely on reading without taking notes. As for the psychological problems, I think it's quite normal to face some disturbing feelings, and stress is inevitable.
Shaun's wishing everybody success in the contest.

You said Enhlish lit ? looking for modernist lit ?
well don't look to much then! James joyce or V. woolf are definitively the key two figures of modern Brit Lit, Ulysses by Joyce has been hailed as the emblem of all 20th C novels where he used his pionering technique, the stream of conciousness, Dubliners( a serie of short stories) will give you a good read too, ot's all about contemprory Irland as well as its contemprory issues, i think the novel is available on the net.
As for the second, I suggest one of Virginia's works, like Joyce, she has been best known for her flow of thought that may take a pages n pages without putting a single coma nor any kind of punctuation. MRs Dollaway or To the Lighthouse might be a good choice for you.
You can check D.H Lawrence works as well as far as you mentioned modern lit, for example Women in Love.
Regards !
