It was a spring day; the sun rose early that day as if it was in a hurry to throw its warm beams on the creatures happy by seeing the naked trees started covering their bare branches. The flowers opened their buds welcoming the joyful days of spring, and wafted their odour everywhere.
Amal, not like usual, woke up early on that day; it seemed that she hadn't slept at all. The exhilaration of a meeting she was expecting expelled sleeping from her eyes and invited insomnia to accompany her the whole night…

She was the first one who woke up in the house. She opened the window of her room letting some rays to enter and cast their light on the sleeping stuffs in the room and breaking the slight darkness. The fresh and cold breeze of early mornings wafted through the window into the warm room and swayed the lace curtains gently. Amal stood up for seconds at the window filling her lungs by that clean fresh air then , excitedly, arranged her bed and put on her clothes. There was no doubt that she was going to wear her favourite dress; the violet silky one with the transparent delicate veil knotted at her waist, throwing gracefully on her legs till the half of her calves. The dress, albeit plain, seemed beautiful on her; she looked alluring as if the happiness which was tickling her heart reflected on her and shone in her face spreading a deep luster which flashed into her eyes. She brushed her hair and let it gently waving to the middle of her back, put on a silver necklace with its earrings and bracelet. She took her handbag and hurried to the kitchen to have her breakfast.
Everything in the kitchen was in the place her mother put last night, sinking under a deep silence except from the sound of the old refrigerator which made a loud sound like a scream from time to time breaking the heavy quietness.
Amal prepared coffee and oriented to her mother’s room to wake her up but the sharp scent of coffee which spread in the small house was faster than her for it reached her mother’s nose to wake her up before the arrival of Amal, “It is quarter past seven, mom, and you are still sleeping! Wake up and see how beautiful this day is!” Said Amal excitedly.
She, hurriedly, took two sips of coffee, then looked at the watch in her wrist, “It is still early, but I have to go now; arriving early is better than being late!” Thought Amal, so that she held her handbag, kissed her mother and rushed out of home with a mind filled with expectations and a heart full of hopefulness; the meeting took every ounce of her mind, and each second passed away sharpened her excitement...

Amal arrived after five minutes at the bus station, there were a man and two women standing there. She greeted the women with a dimpled smile and stood next to them waiting the bus to come. Amal looked at the frowning man with dark circles around his eyes; it seemed that he hadn't slept the whole night as her, but it was clear that there was something that bewildered and exasperated him from his countenance and the way he looked at the watch in his wrist each ten seconds. It was clear that he was in a hurry waiting the bus to come earnestly yet the bus wouldn't come before the bus station would be crowded as usual, and when it would come it would be crowded that if you found a place for your right foot you wouldn't find another place for your left one!
The long wait devoured the man's patience who started murmuring cursing the bus drivers, the authorities and the people who accepted that miserable state! He looked at the watch once more and crossed the road to the taxi station where he got into a taxi and went away. Amal followed the taxi by her sight until it was lost in the emptiness of the road! She looked at the watch with a smile thinking that she was like that man, but it was still early for her...

but it was still early for her for that the meeting is supposedly to take place around half past eight. Still, traffic is an everyday-battle that people have to go through each time they go to work as well as coming back from it. Amal was taken by her too exaggerated optimism for a second till she was brought back to the real life as soon as she heard the awaited bus' horns. It was a brand new coaster; two light blue lines on each side and the rest of the carcass was covered up with a white color. The door was opened, and the first to come out was young lad in his twenties who helped the people to descend the bus. Each of which went his or her own way; it was chaotic but one can observe a certain order in it. Amal helped herself in and as she was doing so, she heard some flattering words from the young lad himself, but she couldn't care less as she went on finding an empty seat and settled on it...

The bus was not crowded as it used to be as it was early somehow, yet she didn’t find an empty seat. She stood for a while until she heard a young man calling her saying: “Come miss, come and have a sit!” She thanked him and settled on. By a glimpse, Amal swept the bus by her eyes; it seemed that some were going to study, others to work, and the rest somewhere. Some were chatting with each others, and some were silent, looking through the windows with half-opened eyes and yawning from time to time.
The young lad was looking at her with an intimate gaze and smiling eyes, yet he didn’t receive a tiny glance from her. She viewed him from the corner of her eye and noticed his seductive looks but she didn’t care since her mind was thinking about the meeting she awaited for long.
In the midst of her thoughts arose a soft yet sorrowful sound of a woman who was sitting just behind Amal’s chair. The lady was talking with one of the women who were standing at the bus station. It seemed that the wretched lady was venting her melancholy after finding an attentive ear. She was talking about her addictive husband and how he used to sell anything reached his hands just for the sake of getting a sniff of drug, but after being caught in a theft, he was now in jail and the lady was going to visit him there. Sadness, fear, and hopelessness mingled together in the lady’s voice to denote how distraught with grief the woman was!
“Two months had elapsed since he entered the prison,” added the woman. “And you can imagine how miserable months they were. I …

Woken up by the woman's horrying yell which was followed by several shouts and cursings that Amal never heard in her entire life. The brakes' sound was too loud that enflamed fear in the bravest man aboard. The driver took the lion's share of the cussing and the yelling as soon as everyone made sure that all turned well. There were some wise old men trying to calm everyone within the bus and were trying to restore serenity again. The teenager who almost got everyone killed in the bus had something to say to the bus' driver as well. Oh boy! it was his unlucky day indeed. The young man pulled over and started screaming out some words angrily that Amal vaguely heard, but sure enough they were not that kind, she figured. The bus' driver carried on as if nothing happened since he's so used to these situations. It was a part of his everyday life. Amal realized, though she was so sympathized with the old lady's grief, that it wasn't so nice to poke her noise in anyone's bussiness, so she seized listening to their talk and just focused on what she was about to say in the meeting... that, if there would be a meeting in the first place, since her boss isn't that serious of a guy and he has often been absent in such vital meetings.

Amal was thinking about that meeting while looking at the green, vast tracts the bus passed by. The sweet breeze of the morn made those large lands look like a serene sea, and the green grass swaying left and right like fierce waves. The daisies tossed their heads up to the sky as if trying to whisper something to the sun. Amal was keen on daisy flowers, in fact it was her favourite kind of flowers. She remembered now that her boss, after knowing that, used to bring her some whenever she did a strenuous job. “Ah, hope that the boss will be at the meeting or at least arrive before the meeting is over”, said Amal to herself as her boss used to be absent in such meetings or if he did his best, he arrived before the end of the meeting by ten or twenty minutes.
The boss, albeit not serious, was competent and qualified. He was, too, very helpful and comprehensive. In fact he helped Amal a lot in her beginnings, and even he had a hand to be appointed at that company. She was appointed by some connections; her uncle knew some one who knew some one who himself knew the boss, so that she was easily accepted at that job. In fact her case is like many others, it is enough to know some privileged people or to have 'a head and shoulders' to be at the place you want even if you don’t deserve it!
Amal took her cell phone to call her boss, but she abandoned the idea after a jiffy. While fiddling with the phone wondering whether to call or no, she remembered that her boss told her one day to call him whenever there is a meeting to remind him. So that she pressed on the bottom of contacts to appear the list of contact, then went to the number of ‘Boss’ and pressed on it to appear dialling on the screen for few seconds then connecting; a ring, two, three…

The boss answered "Good morning Amel, what is wrong with you?". With
soft and kind voice she said " Good morning, aren't you

know that she had only five DA in her cell phone. But the generous boss called
her back and asked her to calm down.
Then she felt so happy...

Amal ended the call wishing that her boss would really come though she was sheer sure he wouldn’t. She unzipped her white hand-bag and put her cell phone in to find four eyes staring at her, the two men who were standing next to her were looking at her. In fact it is normal thing in our buses; it is what happens when your phone rings, they hear it even before you yourself hear it, and when you pick it up to answer, you find many eyes staring at your lips trying to decipher what you are saying, and many ears eavesdropping on your conversation!
Amal, after finishing her call, dived again into her silence looking through the window to the people opening their shops preparing themselves for a new day, wishing it would be better than the yester one. This shop ‘Fast Food’, this one ‘Quick food’, another one there ‘Fajitas chez Riyad’, and another one ‘Indian Food’ and another one, too, ‘Fissa Food’. “As if all what people care for is filling the emptiness of that muscular sac-like shape organ: the stomach!” Thought Amal. In fact the shops for selling food are everywhere so that you find yourself sometimes perplexed in which bistro you will fill your stomach. And when you don’t find this shop for food, be sure that it will be for selling clothes, and specifically women's clothes!

“I am almost to arrive”, said Amal to herself, “better for me to read what I will say for the last time!” So that she opened her note book where her speech was written and roved her eyes between the lines in few seconds.
The bus arrived to its last halt, so that Amal descended and paced to the company located on the other side of the road. Her legs twitched convulsively when she crossed the road and her heart throbbed violently. Each step neared her from the place pulsed a surge of blood into her heart to make it beat faster and faster and faster…

Amal arrived at the glassy gate of the company, it was the first time for her to attend that conference; she was the most qualified so that her boss chose her to represent his society. A sentinel was standing there; she neared from him and asked him where she could find the meeting room. “Go squarely in that corridor, you will find the secretary room at your right hand. The secretary will take you where you want,” said he. She thanked him and went where he told her.
After few feet, she arrived at a closed room written on its door ‘The secretary room’, she knocked the door and entered. The secretary was sitting behind her desk organizing some papers.
"Good morning, miss!" Said Amal.
"Good morning, welcome!" Answered the lady stretching her hand for a shake, then asked Amal to have a seat and wait her to finish the thing she was doing. Amal settled on; her eyes went directly to a watch on the wall in front of her. “Ah, it is a quarter past eight, we still have a quarter before we start!” Said she to herself.
“Well miss, you are welcome in our company! I bet it’s your first time in here?” Said the secretary after moving from behind her desk.
“Yes indeed, it is the first time for me in this meeting.” Retorted Amal, throwing a glance upon her from head to toe.

The secretary was a beautiful, lanky woman. She was from the kind that could catch your sight for long for the second time after the first, fleeting glimpse upon her well made up face, and what added to her more beauty was that radiant smile she drew on her glossy lips. She was wearing a short skirt, could almost cover the half of her thighs with a red blouse, clung on her body so that it could tear on her chest if she sneezed, and a black, high heel shoes which added other few centimeters to her insipid tall.
It was clear that the girl was twenty three years old or thereabouts, but the heavy make up she was wearing added about five years to her real age if not more. Her face was like a beautiful drawing drown by a skillful painter with the red, glossy lips, rosy cheeks, and the multicolour eyelids, besides the dense fringe which hided her forehead and straight hair hanging few centimeters below her shoulders.
Amal wondered how the girl could arrive before her after doing all that! And what a strenuous job she had to do each morning!
“I need to wake up at four to go out of home in time if I would to do all that!” Chuckled Amal sarcastically.

“Come miss! The meeting room is from here!” Said the secretary, and paced to the room in the corner, hugging some papers and swaying left and right like a hen in a roosters’ home…

The two ladies arrived to the meeting room; it wasn't small yet not so vast. It was empty but from that rectangular table in the middle on which the secretary put the papers she was holding in front of each chair with a bottle of Saida, and a desk with a computer on it in the corner near the opened window; it seemed that it was where the secretary was going to sit.
" Have a seat, miss. They will be all in here after five minutes!" Said the secretary smiling...

They will be all in here after five minutes!" Said the secretary smiling. The five minutes seemed for Amal like five hours for the time passes too slow when we are waiting something to happen or someone to come. The seconds become minutes, the minutes hours, and no need to say how the hours extend themselves and pass too slow taking with them every ounce of our patience and throwing us in the labyrinth of waiting. As if the watch in Amal's wrist knew what was turning in her mind and felt her heart's throbs for that it slowed its ticking!
"Good morning, ladies!" Said the director with a rough voice saving Amal from that dizzy maze of waiting and gave a boost to her watch which sounded announcing eight and a half. A new breath filled her lungs after that long wait which consumed every minutia of her patience; she looked at the director and responded gently: "Good morning, sir!"...

A fine young man in his twenties came in and did the greetings. He is tall, round faced and has dimples which decorate his face when he smiles, and that did not happen very often . His hair is straight as if that of a woman, but short. His thick voice gave notice to a manly presence. He has a good way with words that made women fall for him easily, but he can be quite annoying . Had he wanted to get married, he would have done with any of those who deliberately thrown themselves upon him. Ambition consumed his energy, ushered him to unexplored places. It took over his personal, professional and social life. He stays up late working on project on his to-do list. His employees always complain about him coming late, and at times not coming at all. "Oh, I wish I were in my comfy bed, rolling under the warm blanket which my mom bought me the other day" Said Peter resentfully. "Here we go again! and he still lives with his mom! God!" whispered Amal. " I mean, look, no one has showed up yet, they always made sure I make it in time! but them,no, no one has the right to talk in their presence! Hypocrites! " "Oh, that is ok sir, do not mind them, you know how they are. Let us try to focus on what we came for today and make the best of it," Amal attempting hopelessly to calm things down. " I don't even know what I am here for, pfff, I hate this job, I hate my life! " replied Peter in an even louder voice. " Would you stop being a baby and just focus for God sake!" she whispered those words again and never dared saying them outloud. The assistant stood there baffled, not understanding what was going on around her. She excused herself and went out of the room murmuring: " a bunch of crazy retards ..."

Amel went to a corner of the balcony as if to adjust her thoughts that have just been bamboozled by this young spoiled man. She remembered the battles she had to join with to get here, to get a descent life for her..for her mother. "I can't go back now...not now!", she coached herself.
But she knew what kind of troubles she will have to face if this is the kind of retards she will have to deal with.
"I wish I could tell him what I think, what I see in him...hum 'Sir, I see what you are, I see what kind of felllow you...' But wouldn't that sound rude for a first meeting?!" She soliloquized.
And then she remembered that action is better than any eloquent speech "if I had to fight any other battle, he would be my next battle!"

She put herself together and she decided to go back to the room.

Well-built and smartly dressed gentelmen kept coming in the conference room, one tailing the other as if it were a military marche. Since the merger of Amal's comapany, the new bosses have brought about a lot of changes. Penctuality was not one of them. "I know, don't even start! The traffic jam was unbarable!" said John, the CEO. "same story, different days..." said Peter complaining. Peter had held to John's position for more than four years before the it was decided that "PFA" needed to go internationl. A decision that lost Peter his job...

Amal observed the two fellows
circumspectly as they entered the room. The door shut with finess behind
them, she wondered how long she was going to wait?
After an interval, Peter came out abruptly and whispered to Amal:
"Come in, John is calling you", looking at her from the corner of his eye.
Amal stood up gracefully and followed Peter to the meeting room.

"Come in ...Euh ...Miss...", John turned to Peter as if questionning him.
