~~ Home In Britain ~~
The majority of British people live in small houses. only one-eight of all homes in Britain are flats which are more numerous in the london area and in Scotland than anywhere else in Britain.
Types Of House :
Three-quarters of all houses in Britain have 4 to 6 rooms (excluding the kitchen and the bathroom). They are either semi-detached (join to another house on one side only) or tenaced (joined to other houses on both sides). They nearly always have a garden at the back, and often a small garden at the front.
most houses are built of red brick, white red tile roofs. In the suburbs of large towns every house in a road maybe identical, and sometimes all houses in several roads in the district are almost identical. The houses themselves are rarely intresting architecturally and this uniformty can be rather monotonous.
The Most common type of suburban hous has this accommondation on the ground floor : an entrance hall, a living room and a dining room and a kitchen, with a back door opening into the garden. Up stairs : a landing, 3 bed-rooms, a bathroom and a lavatory. It has neither cellars' nor attics. It may have a garage at one side. Most people who lives houses euther own them or are buying them on a mortgage (a loan which they pay back over a number of years). Flats are generally let, at rather high rents, but recentely the practice of buying and selling flats has been developped.
Modern Flats:
The more modern flats, which include the great number built by municipal councils, are in large blocks, and are usually provided with central heating and constant hot water, but they have rather small rooms. There are also, in London especially, a great many big houses, built on 4 or 5 floors which have been turned into several flats. These often have large rooms, but lack central heating and other modern comforts. A number of newly-built houses have central heating, and a lot of people are installing in older houses but the average British house is still a chilly place in winter.

~~ Public Holidays ~~
Christmas :
Christmas is the big family festival of the year. Wherever they can people spend Christmas with their relatives. Officially, 2 days are holidays Christmas Day and the following day, which is called Boxing day, because in the distant past, servants were given their Christmas presents or boxes on that day, in practice a number of people manage to get 3 day's holiday at Christmas.
In Homes where there are children, the celebration start early on Christmas morning. The children wake early to look at their presents which Father Christmas is supposed to have put in their stockings during the night, or left at the foot of the Christmas tree (a small fir tree) which most people have in their homes at this time of year. Christmas dinner, generally in the middle of the day, is a large meal. The most important dish is usually turkey, but maybe duck, goose or chiken. This is followed by Christmas pudding or mince pies or both. Christmas pudding is a mixture of flour, suet, sugar, raisins, sultanas, eggs and brandy, which is steamed for several hours. Mince pies are tarts containing a minced mixture of raisins, apples, currants, almonds, cherries, lemon juice, suet, sugar and brandy. On Boxing Day, most families eat cold turkey and recover from Christmas Day.

The New Year :
All over Britain, parties and dances are held on New Year's Eve, and in London, noisy crowds assemble in Piccadilly Circus, and outside St. Paul's Cathedral, in order to see the New Year in. But after that, in the south of England, however, it is often a public holiday.
In Scotland, New Year or Hogmanay as the Scots call it, is more important than Christmas. There is a lot of gaiety on New Year's Eve, and after midnight, the ceremony of "First Footing" has to be observed. It is supposed to bring good luck to a house if the first person to set foot in it . The New Year's Day is a holiday, and an occasion for family partioes and visits.

Other Public Holiday :
Easter is the next public holiday, when everything closes on Good Priday and Easter Monday. Then come Whitsuntide with a holiday on Whit Monday. Whitsun and August are called Bank Holidays, and were originally intended only for Bank staffs. But, when the Banks were closed, other businesses decided to close too, and now these three days have become holidays for everyone.

Britain is primarily an industrial country, and 41% of the working population is employed in minig or in manufacturing industries. Only 4 (1/2)% of all workers are engaged in agriculture.

Important Industries :

The most important industries in Britain are :
Coal-minig, haevy engineering, metal manufacture, vehicule and aircraft manufacture, ship bulding and textile and clothing manufacture.
The principale centres of industry are :
The London area : engeneering, chemicals food and drink.
South-west England : aircraft, railway, marine and genaral engeneering, shipbuilding.
The midlands : vehicule, coal-minig, engeneering, steel manufacture, pottery and china.
Lancashire : cotton textile, engeneering, shipbulding, chemicals , coat mining.

North-East England : ship building, coal-minig, chemicals.
South Wales : coal-minig, steel manifacture.

Working Conditions :

The working week varies from 42 to 48 hours. Most factories and offices work a five-day week, with Saturday and Sunday free, but some still work five and half days, with Saturday afternoon and Sunday free. Daily time of work also vary, and work may begin at time between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m . An hour, or in some cares, 45 minutes, is allowed for lunch. Most workers in industries and trade get two weeks's holiday a year with pay. Office staffs and profissional workers may get either 3 or 4 weeks's holiday. The retiring age, after which state retirement pensions are paid, is 60 for women and 65 for men. But a fair number of people continue to work after they have reached the official retiring age.
Trade unions are powerful in Britain. More then 9(1/2) million workers are numbers of more than 650 trade unions. The majority of these are affiliated to the Trades Union Congress ( T.U.C) which is the centre of the trade union movement, and a very influential body.

~~ The Geographiy Of Britain ~~
The United Kingdom consiste of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Irland. Britain is the name frequentley given to the country as a whole. It also includes the channel Islands, not far from the coast Normandy, the Isles of Scilly, west off North Wales, the Isles of Man in the Irish Sea, and the 186 inhabited islands which suround Scotland, which include the Herbrides and the Orkneys and Sheklands.
The area of United Kingdom is 93018 square miles (France 212895 square miles). It is appoximately 600 miles from north to south, and 300 miles across from east to west, at its widest point. No place in Britain is more than 75 miles from the sea.

Mountains And Plains :
The highest mountains in Britain are : Ben Nevis (which means "snowy Mountain") in Scotland 4406 ft, Snowdon in North Wales 3560 ft, and Scafell Pike, in north west England 3210 ft. The principale mountain rangesare : The Pennine Chain, and the associated Cumbrian mountains in northern England, the Uplands of southern Scotland and the Highlands of northern Scotland and the Cumbrian mountains in Wales.
Most of England is hilly rolling and welt wooded, but East Angglia, which includes Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, is very flat. Nearlally England is fertile, and suitable for agriculture. In most of Scotland and Wales the soil is poorer, and more suitable for sheep-farming than crop-growing.

Lakes and Rivers :

There are a good many rivers in Britain, but most of them are short. The two longest are the servern (220 miles) and the Thames (210 miles). A number of rivers have large estrearies, which from valuable natural harbours. Britain's main ports and shipbuilding centres, such as London, Southampton, Liverpool, Newcastle and Glasgow, are all situated on or near estuaries.
Lakes are not numerous, except in the area known ar "The Lake District" in Cumberland and Westnerland, and in Scotland. Here lakes are called (locks) and can be either fresh water lakes or arms of the sea which extend several miles inland
.

Scenery And Geology :
Although Britain is small, it contains rocks of all the main geological periods, and its complex geology has resulted in a great variety of scenery. Most of southern and eastern England is based on chalk and limestone, which form the famous "white cliffs of Dover", red sandstone can be founded frequently on the western side of England, and most of northern Scotland stands on granite.

~~ The People Of The United Kigdom ~~

Racial Origins :

The British are a mixed race. Before 1100 A.D, a series of invasions took the inhabitants of several other countries to Britain.
a) Iberian, Mideterranean and Alpine people went to Britain at the dawn of British history several 1000 years before Christ.
b) Between 700 and 600 B.C, the Celts from north-west Germany and the Northerlands bagan to cross the sea to Britain.
c) From 43 to 410 A.Dn Britain was accupied by the Romains, but their number were small, and they intermarried very little with the natives.
d) The Angles and Sawons from south Danemark and north Germany began to invade Britain almost as soon as the Romans left. The Celts fled to northern Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
e) The Vikings from Danemark and Norway invade England in the ninth century, and setteled in the east and the east midlands.
f) The Normans led the last invasion of Britain in 1066, and Duke William of Normandy became the King of England.

The British Today :
The English of today are, therfore, a people of Germanic and Scandinavian blood, mixed with the little of Mediterranean blood of the early Iberian settlers, and the small amount of French blood added by the Normans.
The Highland Scots, the Welsh and the Irish are people of Celtic descent. The north of Scotland, Wales and Eire (southern Irland) are sometimes called collectively the Celtic fringe.
The lowland Scots and the Northern Irish are rather more like the northern English, although they have some Celtic blood.

The Language Of British Isles :
The English language is derived from Anglo-Saxon, but has been influenced both by the old Norse of the Vikings and the French of the Normans.
In Wales, one third of the people speak Welsh, a Celtic language, as their mother tongue. In the north of Scotland, about 75000 people speak Gaelic a related Celtic language. In Eire, which is now an independent republic, Erse, another Celtic language has been artificially revived.

Differences In Character :
Although it is difficult to generalize about the characteristics of the different races of the British Isles, the following points are generally accepted :
The Celts are believed to be more artistic, imaginative and emotional than the Anglo-Saxons. This is particularly marked in the Welsh and the Irish, but much less so in the Scots. The Welsh are very gifted in peotry and music, and the Irish in peotry and drama.
The Irish are care-free, not particularly pratical or good at business, and spend money easily and happily.
The Scots are ambitions, good businessmen, and careful with their money. A large number of Scots have been extremely sucessful in England, and overseas in the common wealth.

Economi Differences :
In earlier times, communications were easier in England than in the more mountainous Scotland and Wales, therfore it was possible to establish a modern central governement in England much earlier than in Scotland or Wales.
The soil of England is richer than the soil of Scotland or Wales. Therfore England became a more properous country in the days when men depended on agriculture for their living. Because England was propetous, industry developed there more quickly than in Scotland and Wales.
As industry developed, the population grew more quickly in England than in Scotland or Waled. Today there are more than 43 million people in England, compared with 5(1/4) million in Scotland, 2(1/2) milllion in Wales, and less than 1(1/2) million in Northern Irland.

~~ School And Universities ~~

All children in Britain must go to school when they are five :
They are not allowed to leave school before they are 15. The majority of children prefer to go to State-controlled schools, where no fees are charged. Books and equipment are provided free
.

The State System :
The state system comprises the following schools :
1- Primary Schools : which are co-educational, and attended by children between the age of 5 and 11.
2- Secondary Schools : to which pupils go when they are 11. Some are co-educationaln some for boys anly, and some for girls only. (In the past of course, i don't think that they still exist). There are 4 types of Secondary schools :

a) Secondary Grammar School give an academic education, and prepare pupils for the proffesions and the universities. About a quarter of all pupils go to these schools, where they stay until they are 16, 17, 18 and 19.
b) Secondary Modern Schools give a more pratical general education, and attended by the majority of children. Most pupils leave these schools when they are 15, some stay for another year.
c) Secondary Technical Schools, which are very few, combine general and technical education.
d) Comprehensive School, which are very few, and very large, combine the 3 types of education mentioned above.
This system applies to England and Wales. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, secondary education is organized on slightly different basis.

Independent Schools:
There many independent schools, where fees are charged, attended by about some children. they include all types of school. A number are boarding schools, of which the most famous are the "Public School", such as Eton and Harrow. some of the Public Schools were founded in the 14th and 15th centuries. They charge extremely high fees and they give a very good education, but it is somtimes said that they encourage snobbery.
The Universities :

There are about 32 universities in Britain, and several other will be opened in the few years. The oldest are Oxford and Cambridge founded in the Middle Ages. Here, students live and work in their colleges. The 4 Scotish universities are also very old, but not residential. The largest university is London. Most students go to the university when they are 18 or 19 and stay there for 3 years.

Club In London :
Clubs play an important part in London life, but are less important in the provinces. There are a large number of clubs, most of them for men only with dining-rooms, bars, lounges, libraries, writing-rooms, and sometimes bed-rooms. In most clubs, all the members have some common intrest. The Caledonian Club, for instance, is for conservatives, and the St.Jame's for diplomats. There are a few women's club of type, and also a small number for both men and women. Subscriptions are generally high, and members ship is only for people with money.
