Hello Bilinda,
Here's what I think conserning you query and I hope it's helpful.

Hard Times was published as a serial by Dickens in his weekly journal, Household Words. The novel was serialized (i.e. published serially) for financial reasons because it encouraged the readership and doubled the journal's circulation. Every week between April 1 and August 12, 1854 Charles Dickens published a part. It sold well, and a complete volume was published in August. For this reason, the novel is divided into three Books, each book with titled chapters.

personally i started reading Hard Times Novel. i'm going to finish the first part of the Book. Even it's difficult but i'm using some analysis which help me a loooooooooot. just go ahead and don't be lazy
